The meters are being replaced with eco-friendly automatic readers, which send water usage information directly into a computer system, instead of requiring someone to drive around and manually collect and input the data.

The city says the new meters are much more accurate and people may see their water bills go up as a result.


Utilities staff say residents don't need to be home during the replacement, which takes about 15 minutes.

About 75% of the water meters will be replaced in Thomasville, according to Thomasville employee Greg Lawrence.

The project is being paid for with a revolving loan from the state of Georgia. Because it cuts down emissions and fuel consumption, the meter replacements qualify as a 'green' initiative.

As such, only 50% of the loan will have to be paid back to the state, which will total a little over $1 million.
